Inspired by words…

Here is a Wordle that I created with the words that we use in the Fine Arts Studio… this word cloud will be an example for my students of the importance of words, and their connection to our ideas and thoughts in the studio. However, when no words can express the thoughts and ideas we have in our heads, art helps us communicate…

Ah, Mona!

Mona Lisa is a presence in my classroom–her attentive listening pose, complete with that “I am listening” smile, her hands gently folded on her lap, her back straight, her eyes on the viewer… what more could an Art teacher want? Thank you, Signor Da Vinci, for your contribution to my classroom, now class: tell me what you see in this painting…

Ready to fly!

I thought the image of the bird on the branch was appropriate for this blog–as educators we each could be that bird on the branch ready to teach others how to fly, or it may be that the bird just learned something new, and is about to test it on its own. I like to think that the branch is the safe place we land between adventures in teaching, a respite from the business of it all, and a well-earned opportunity for reflection. This is what I see this blog will be about–an opportunity to reflect on what is happening in my classroom, in my field, and in education in general. It will be a branch on which to rest, but also from which to take the risk to go forward–upward to great things. The safety of our prior experiences, our education, our knowledge is always with us after all–it is just a matter of taking the leap forward that keeps the adrenalin pumping… and keeps me wondering, on which branch will I land next?
